How do you know when it's time to see a therapist? I hear it all the time- people who have been struggling for a while and trying to get by with one or two coping tools or whatever advice they can find on the internet. Or maybe they don't even realize how bad things have gotten until a loved says, "maybe you should see someone". So let's talk about signs that it might be time to seek professional help.
1 You're having trouble managing your emotions. This might mean crying all the time, anger outbursts, being unable to stop worrying, or mood swings. Or it might mean a lack feeling- such as feeling numb or unable to find joy or motivation.
2 You're having a hard time functioning at work, school, in relationships, or other responsibilities. If your moods or thoughts are making life difficult or impossible then it might be time to see someone.
3 You want to experience personal growth. Therapy isn't always about treating specific symptoms. Sometimes people want grow into a better version of themself or learn how they can cope better with the demands of life.
4 You've experienced trauma in the past. Past abuses and traumas can have a lasting impact on a person's life in sometimes surprising ways. Therapy can help you address and heal from these traumas.
5 You're having suicidal thoughts or self-harming. If you are experiencing either of these you should ALWAYS seek our professional help. Suicidal thoughts and self harm are serious and not something you should face alone. The Crisis Hotline is available to call or text at 988.
Of course this is not a full accounting of all the reasons a person might seek out therapy. Ultimately, it's a personal choice to make an investment in one's self. If you're not sure, reach out to a therapist and ask if therapy can help.
