To find a therapist specializing in insomnia, sleep problems, or CBT-I in Florida, look for a licensed
mental health professional with specific training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia, experience treating insomnia, and either located near you or offering online therapy in Florida. The use of specific therapist search directories can be useful.
What is CBT-I?
CBT-I is a short-term, structured, evidence-based therapy for chronic insomnia and sleep problems. It is considered the gold standard treatment for insomnia and is more effective than medications. CBT-I addresses the behaviors, thoughts, and anxiety that can keep sleep problems going. It goes beyond sleep hygiene and general relaxation strategies.
Your CBT-I therapist will assess your sleep problems and develop a plan to improve your body's drive for sleep and retrain the way your mind and body handle sleep. You can expect to keep a sleep log or diary and your CBT-I therapist will work with you to develop a sleep schedule that will "re-align" you with the rhythms and drives that facilitate good sleep. You can also expect to work on thoughts, worries, beliefs, and behaviors that may be worsening sleep. Your CBT-I therapist can help you learn strategies for relaxation and falling back asleep if you've woken.
What Training Should a CBT-I Therapist Have?
A CBT-I therapist should be a licensed mental health or healthcare provider with training specifically in CBT-I. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, CBT, is different from CBT-I and you should not assume a therapist who provides CBT is trained or ready to treat insomnia with CBT-I. While regular CBT may be helpful with anxious thoughts, CBT-I therapists have advanced training in sleep science and the protocols effective at treating insomnia.
A CBT-I therapist will consider and, if necessary, include CBT-I components of sleep education, a sleep diary, stimulus control, sleep restriction/compression, sleep disrupting thoughts, and relaxation strategies. Not everyone will need all of these component in equal measure but a trained CBT-I therapist will evaluate and include them when necessary. A CBT-I therapist should also be screening for conditions like sleep apnea, RLS, narcolepsy, and circadian rhythm disorders and referring to a medical doctor where appropriate. A CBT-I therapist should be assessing for and considering health conditions influence and are influenced by sleep or CBT-I measures.
CBT-I vs Sleep Hygiene
Sleep hygiene is a collection of behaviors that help facilitate sleep, such as having a bedtime routine and avoiding screens at night. While good sleep hygiene is important, it is generally insufficient to treatment chronic insomnia or more problematic sleep problems. A good analogy is that cleaning an infected wound is an important first step but that the application of an antibiotic is necessary for actually treating the infection. Sleep hygiene is an important foundational component but CBT-I goes beyond this to address the actual issues that are perpetuating the insomnia or sleep difficulties.

Do I Need a Sleep Study to do CBT-I?
No, not necessarily. At it's core, insomnia is about anxiety related to sleep and the thoughts and behaviors that develop in a way that worsens sleep. A sleep study is not needed to diagnosis insomnia or justify CBT-I. There are medical conditions, such as sleep apnea, that can interfere with sleep. Your CBT-I therapist will screen for things like sleep apnea and refer you to a medical sleep specialist for a sleep study if necessary.
Finding a CBT-I Therapist in Florida (or anywhere else)
Finding a therapist who provides CBT-I can be difficult because it is a specialized treatment and not every therapist who uses CBT has specific training in insomnia treatment or the specific CBT-I interventions. In larger cities, you may be able to find a local provider, but in many parts of Florida, the number of therapists offering CBT-I is limited.
Online therapy can expand your options considerably and CBT-I can be provided effectively through telehealth. This allows adults anywhere in Florida or the state where you live to work with a therapist trained in CBT-I in their state, even when there is not a specialist nearby.
For people in the Sarasota, Lakewood Ranch, and Bradenton areas, both local and online options may be available. For those elsewhere in Florida without local providers, online CBT-I can make it easier to find a provider with the right training without being limited by driving distance.
You can use a directory such as the CBT-I directory from the UPenn Perelmen School of Medicine to find a provider.
