CBT-I, or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia, is a structured, evidence-based treatment for chronic insomnia. It goes beyond basic sleep hygiene by addressing the thoughts, behaviors, body rhythms, and learned patterns that can keep insomnia going over time.

What to expect from CBT-I

Treatment begins with understanding your sleep patterns, current habits, stressors, and what you have already tried. From there, we create a plan to address the patterns that may be keeping insomnia going.

While every person is different CBT-I addresses 5 main components:

Sleep Scheduling

Our body works in rhythms and cycles. With insomnia, the cycle of wakefulness and sleepiness is sometimes disrupted. CBT-I can "reset" these cycles through sleep scheduling based on your unique sleep patterns and needs.

Sleep Disrupting Thoughts

Worry about sleep will almost always prevent sleep. CBT-I works to identify and address patterns in thinking that are negatively impacting sleep. The CBT-I therapist will also teach tools and strategies for dealing with racing thoughts, worry, and minds that just won't turn off.

Relaxational Strategies

Many people have difficulty fully relaxing or turning their mind and body off. CBT-I can help you learn strategies that promote relaxation and calm for bedtime.

Bed | Wakefulness Connections

If you've spent many nights tossing and turning or lying awake frustrated or worried, the bed can become associated with wakefulness, worry, or frustration. CBT-I identifies and addresses ways in which this may be happening.

Sleep Disrupting Behaviors

Sometimes people unknowingly do things that disrupt their sleep cycle. CBT-I works to identify and behaviors or lifestyle factors that may be impacting sleep and working to build patterns and behaviors that promote healthy sleep.

CBT-I FAQ

Is CBT-I the same as sleep hygiene?

No. Sleep hygiene is general sleep advice. CBT-I is a personalized and more structured treatment for insomnia that addresses the thoughts, behaviors, and learned patterns that keep sleep problems going.

Is CBT-I effective?

Yes, CBT-I is an evidenced based treatment and considered the gold standard treatment for insomnia and recommended by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

Can CBT-I help if my sleep problems are related to anxiety or stress?

Yes, CBT-I can be especially helpful when insomnia is connected to racing thoughts, sleep anxiety, stress, or feeling “tired but wired.”

What can I expect?

In our initial session we will talk about your sleep issues and goals. You will then begin completing a daily sleep diary/log which you will continue to use throughout treatment. Each session, Katie will guide you through a plan based on your individual needs.

Where are you located

Bernard Counseling is based in the Sarasota | Lakewood Ranch area though all sessions are provided via convenient and secure video sessions, allowing Katie to see adults anywhere in Florida.

Do I need a sleep study first?

Not always. If there are signs of sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, narcolepsy, or another medical sleep disorder, it may be important to speak with a physician or sleep specialist. CBT-I can also work alongside medical care when insomnia or sleep anxiety are part of the picture.

How long does it take?

While every person is different, results can generally be seen in 4-8 sessions.
