Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Acceptance & Commitment Therapy for Adults in Florida

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, often called ACT, is an evidence-based therapy approach that helps people respond differently to difficult thoughts, emotions, and life experiences.

Many people come to therapy wanting painful thoughts or feelings to go away. That makes sense. Anxiety, sadness, panic, self-doubt, guilt, shame, and overwhelm can be exhausting. But sometimes the harder we fight our internal experiences, the more stuck we become.

ACT is not about pretending things are fine, forcing positivity, or convincing yourself not to feel what you feel. Instead, ACT helps you build a different relationship with your thoughts and emotions so they do not have to control your choices. The goal is to help you live more fully and intentionally, even when life includes discomfort.

Based in the Sarasota and Lakewood Ranch area, serving adults throughout Florida through secure video sessions.

What is ACT?

ACT is a therapy approach that focuses on psychological flexibility. In plain language, psychological flexibility means being able to notice what is happening inside you, make room for difficult thoughts and feelings when needed, and still take steps toward the life you want to build.

ACT helps people work with questions like:

  • What matters most to me?

  • What kind of person do I want to be in this situation?

  • Are my thoughts helping me move forward, or keeping me stuck?

  • Am I avoiding discomfort in ways that are making my life smaller?

  • How can I take meaningful action even when anxiety or uncertainty is present?

ACT does not aim to eliminate every uncomfortable emotion. Humans are not built to feel calm, happy, and confident all the time. Instead, ACT helps you develop tools to respond to discomfort in a more flexible and effective way.

How ACT can help

ACT can be especially helpful for people who feel stuck in cycles of overthinking, avoidance, anxiety, perfectionism, people-pleasing, self-criticism, or emotional overwhelm.

You may benefit from ACT if you often:

  • Get caught in anxious or repetitive thoughts

  • Avoid things because they feel uncomfortable or uncertain

  • Feel controlled by fear, guilt, or self-doubt

  • Struggle with perfectionism or fear of making mistakes

  • Spend a lot of energy trying to feel “better” before taking action

  • Have a hard time tolerating difficult emotions

  • Feel disconnected from your values or priorities

  • Know what matters to you but struggle to follow through

  • Feel stuck trying to control thoughts or feelings that will not cooperate

ACT can help you shift from asking, “How do I get rid of this feeling?” to “How do I move forward while making room for this feeling?”

ACT and Anxiety

Anxiety often tells us that we need certainty before we can act. It says we need to feel calm, prepared, confident, or completely ready before we do the hard thing. ACT takes a different approach.

Rather than waiting for anxiety to disappear, ACT helps you learn how to carry anxiety differently. You can notice anxious thoughts without treating them as commands. You can feel discomfort without automatically avoiding. You can take values-based steps even when your mind is offering worst-case scenarios.

This does not mean ignoring anxiety or forcing yourself into overwhelming situations. It means learning that anxiety can be present without being in charge.

For many clients, this is a major part of healing. The goal is not to never feel anxious again. The goal is to stop organizing your life around anxiety.

What ACT looks like in therapy

ACT is practical, but it is not just a collection of coping skills. In therapy, we may work on understanding your patterns, noticing how your mind responds to discomfort, and building new ways of relating to thoughts and emotions.

ACT may include:

  • Identifying values and what matters most to you

  • Learning how to unhook from unhelpful thoughts

  • Practicing acceptance of difficult emotions without letting them control you

  • Reducing avoidance patterns

  • Building tolerance for uncertainty and discomfort

  • Taking small, meaningful steps toward change

  • Developing self-compassion and psychological flexibility

  • Noticing when your mind is trying to protect you in ways that are no longer helpful
